California Active Communities
Creating Opportunities for Everyday Physical Activity

California Active Communities creates opportunities for safe, everyday physical activity through environmental and policy change strategies.

California Active Communities works through strategic alliances with physical activity experts, local governments, school districts, employers, non-profit organizations, and key community stakeholders.

Programs of California Active Communities are nationally — and internationally — renowned. California Active Communities' work to promote more walk- and bike-friendly communities is commended for its ability to engage non-traditional partners such as transportation engineers and land use planners. California Active Communities' work to establish community-based physical activity programs for older adults serves as a model across the nation and has received state, national and international honors.

In 1996, the California Department of Public Health established the Physical Activity & Health Initiative, which became the California Center for Physical Activity in 2004.
